Thanks for coming to visit! CARTS is the result of a group of Central Kenai Peninsula citizens getting together to find a way to give residents a ride...and it works! Throughout the United States transportation and mobility are difficult for many people. In Alaska, this is compounded by the lack of infrastructure, the great distances between homes and work, shopping and services. In addition, the severe climate and poor road conditions in winter create increased problems with mobility and vehicle operation. The challenge was to find a way to improve mobility and freedom for those who need it while keeping costs as low as possible. The solution is a coordinated community attempt to serve the needs of those whose transportation resources are few and whose need is great, utilizing the vehicles and services that we already have in a better way. CARTS is a brokerage for the communities of Kenai, Soldotna, Sterling, Nikiski and Kasilof. Eventually, transportation service will be extended to more areas of the borough. Transportation brokerages have proven successful in other rural areas of the United States, and this approach seems to fit rural Alaska as well. CARTS is expected to be a model for the rest of Alaska, and we have heard from many other communities requesting information on how it might work for them as well.
